Finding Margin in Business and in Life

Turning Accounting on Its Head

It is difficult to believe we launched into the accounting business three years ago with a vision to serve a small number of clients in an exciting and unique way.  The idea behind it was to create a service that cross-pollenized the traditional accounting practice with the more intimate connection of an on-site client-employed bookkeeper or accountant.  In fact, we wanted to create a relationship with our clients whereby we are regularly and actively involved with them thrdreamstime_s_13829855oughout the month to help solve problems and create value beyond the traditional accounting payroll, write-up and tax arenas.  For me it translates to turning accounting on its head.  It’s not just about compliance or financial statements. They are important, but there is so much more to the small business than the report at the close of the month!

I’ve been involved in businesses long enough to learn where the pinch points exist for most small business owners and those needs are far more frequent and not always easily visible or accessible to the traditional accounting profession.  It requires a commitment to leveraging far fewer clients on the books to create the capacity to go much deeper into the client business.  It’s a concept counter-intuitive to the current accounting practice model, but it is beginning to catch on.  I couldn’t be more excited to see that happen!

There is no question this represents a unique niche of small business services, but in my opinion, it is one that is relatively untapped.  There are hundreds of thousands of business owners that would love to have their accountant more actively involved in their business. Really!   The challenge comes with the risk involved in a business such as this; that being the loss of a significant client which creates some interesting revenue swings.  Having weathered a couple of these situations over the past three years, I have learned that when you work hard and do right by your clients, more clients will come at just the right time. As a Christian, I work under the principle of faith where God provides the work; my job is to do my best work.  It is a foundation that has proven true throughout my life.

Looking ahead to this next year, we will be releasing several tools and training opportunities around the concept of cash management for small businesses.  The content will be geared for the benefit of small business owners, but targeted specifically to their administrative and/or bookkeeping staff.  I am excited about the possibilities this opportunity creates, because the area of cash management is the #1 challenge for small business owners and there’s really very little in the market place to help them understand what it is and even less in how to manage it. I believe we have the process and tools to help small business owners do just that.  Look for more information on that in the coming weeks in this blog.    If you know of someone who might be interested in learning more about our cash management tools, please forward this article to them and encourage them to sign up to my email list.

As I close this post, I want to say a very special thank you to my clients.  You each have welcomed me into your private world and I am humbled to be a part of it.   I am blessed to be involved in your businesses and look forward to serving you further in the future.  To my subscribers, I appreciate your interest and support and should you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to email me.

Best Regards,
Chuck Underwood
